There are 1,069,783 food-insecure people in Cameroon, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The study, conducted in the harmonized framework of identification of risk areas and the analysis of food insecure populations, was made public by the Minister of Agriculture, Gabriel Mbairobé, on April 4, in Yaounde.

At his side, the Minister in charge of livestock, as well as representatives of the World Food Program (WFP), and the World Organization for Agriculture (FAO), all involved in studies on food insecurity in the country.

In detail, these analyzes were conducted in 40 departments of 7 of the 10 regions in Cameroon, over a period of three months (March-April-May), according to the minister. It shows that "the situation is acceptable in 33 departments where the food balance is relatively positive. In 7 departments, however, particularly in the northwestern and southwestern regions, the situation is critical. However, no department is in an emergency or famine phase, " said Gabriel Mabirobé.

However, "the situation could deteriorate during the next quarter June-July-August with 21 departments in minimum phase, 12 in phase under pressure and 7 in crisis phase," added the Minister of Agriculture.

A food crisis caused mainly by factors such as the socio-political crises in the extreme north, with the Boko Haram threat, and in the northwestern and southwestern regions, where there is violence between separatist groups and security forces. Crises that lead to massive population displacements, and a continuous influx of refugees into border communities, other factors of food insecurity.

However, the situation is less critical than the previous year, at the same time. Progress that needs to be consolidated and improved. So it is therefore "necessary, to avoid possible disaster patterns in the future, to intensify our action of supervision to the populations, to prevent them from going into emergency or famine," believe the authorities.
